What Is It?

Your legal right to choose where you receive NHS care

The NHS Right to Choose is a legal entitlement under the NHS Constitution that allows patients in England to choose which provider delivers their NHS-funded treatment - including mental health assessments.

Under the Any Qualified Provider (AQP) framework, patients in England may be able to request that their GP refers them to an independent provider, rather than waiting for an NHS adult mental health service appointment. Contact us to discuss whether we can accept your referral.

This means you could receive a comprehensive, clinician-led ADHD assessment - at no cost to you - without joining an NHS waiting list that can stretch to 3–5 years in some areas.

Important

England only

The NHS Right to Choose as described here applies to patients registered with an NHS GP in England. If you are in Wales, Scotland, or Northern Ireland, different rules apply. Please contact us to discuss your options.

Your Rights

Your GP cannot refuse

If your GP agrees that an ADHD assessment is clinically appropriate, they are obligated to support your Right to Choose referral. If they are reluctant, ask to speak to the practice manager or seek a second opinion.

Cost

No cost to you

If you are referred via the NHS Right to Choose pathway, your assessment is funded by the NHS. You pay nothing. We invoice the NHS directly.

How It Works

Step-by-step guide to your NHS-funded assessment

01

Check your eligibility

You must be registered with an NHS GP in England and have been referred (or be willing to request a referral) for an ADHD assessment. The Right to Choose applies to adults in England only.

02

Ask your GP for a referral

Tell your GP you wish to exercise your NHS Right to Choose and that you would like to be referred to ADHD Assessment UK. Your GP cannot refuse a referral if you are clinically appropriate.

03

We receive your referral

Once we receive your GP referral, we will contact you to arrange your assessment. We accept NHS e-Referral Service (e-RS) referrals.

04

Your assessment takes place

Your comprehensive 90-minute ADHD assessment is conducted by one of our NHS-trained specialist clinicians via secure video call - at a time that suits you.

05

Report and next steps

Your detailed diagnostic report is sent to you and your GP within 5 working days. If ADHD is diagnosed, we will discuss treatment options and can support shared care with your GP.

What to say to your GP

Suggested wording

"I would like to exercise my NHS Right to Choose and be referred for an ADHD assessment. I would like to be referred to ADHD Assessment UK, a CQC-registered provider. I understand this is my right under the NHS Constitution."

If your GP is unsure, you can direct them to NHS England guidance on the Right to Choose. You can also contact us and we can provide a letter of support for your GP appointment.
