NHS Waiting Times
Waiting for an NHS ADHD assessment? Your options, without the pressure.
You've started asking questions about ADHD. The problem isn't that you want a label - it's that difficulties at home, work or in relationships may be continuing while you wait to understand what's happening.
There is no single waiting time across the UK. Routes and eligibility differ by nation and local service. You deserve clear options - not a scare story about the NHS, and not pressure to buy a private assessment.
What the national data does - and does not - tell us
NHS England's May 2026 management-information release reported up to 803,658 open referrals that may have been for an ADHD assessment in March 2026. This is a count of possible open referrals, not a verified count of individual people with ADHD, and it does not mean every person faces the same delay.
In October 2026, a government-commissioned review highlighted the importance of earlier support based on need, rather than insisting a formal diagnosis must come first. Waiting for an assessment and accessing practical support are not necessarily the same thing.
Four routes worth comparing before you spend money
Speak to your GP about an NHS referral
Ask what the local adult ADHD pathway is, whether you've already been referred, and what to expect next. Pathways and waits differ by service and by nation.
If you're in England, ask about patient choice
NHS patient choice ("Right to Choose") may let you ask for a different commissioned provider for your NHS-funded assessment. Eligibility and which providers currently hold a contract both matter, and not every provider qualifies.
Ask about support while you wait
Support for anxiety, sleep, or difficulties at work doesn't have to wait for a formal diagnosis. Waiting for an assessment and accessing practical support are not the same thing.
Compare a privately funded assessment
If you'd rather not wait, compare the clinician's qualifications, the assessment method, what the report covers, the full fees, and what aftercare is and isn't included.
A private assessment does not automatically move you up an NHS list, guarantee medication, or require a GP to take over prescribing. Any shared-care request remains a decision for the receiving GP and local arrangements.
What a clinically meaningful assessment should include
An adult ADHD assessment should explore symptoms from childhood, their effect across different areas of life, developmental and mental health history, information from other sources where appropriate, and alternative explanations. NICE advises that diagnosis must not be based on a questionnaire alone.
The best outcome is a well-reasoned clinical conclusion and recommendations, whether or not ADHD is diagnosed. Buying an assessment should never mean buying a predetermined result.
How ADHD Assessment UK can fit into the decision
We currently offer an online, specialist-led adult assessment from £399, with a written report and a discussion of next steps. We also list more comprehensive follow-up packages - check our current fees, eligibility, appointment availability and what isn't included before paying.
If you want the NHS route, that's a valid choice. If you'd like to compare a private option, start by understanding the actual pathway rather than responding to an artificial deadline.
Your next step: practical actions
- Ask your GP which adult ADHD pathway applies locally and whether you have been referred.
- In England, ask about patient choice eligibility rather than assuming every independent provider qualifies.
- Write down two or three real-life examples of symptoms across work, home and earlier life.
- Before booking privately, request an itemised breakdown of assessment, review, prescribing, medication and follow-up costs.
Frequently asked questions
Is the NHS ADHD waiting list three to seven years everywhere?
No. Waiting arrangements and durations vary markedly by service and by nation - avoid treating one local estimate as a national figure.
Can I get practical help without a diagnosis?
Often, yes. For example, Acas guidance says workplaces should explore reasonable adjustments without insisting on a neurodivergence diagnosis first.
Will my GP accept a private ADHD diagnosis or shared care?
Not automatically. This is always a decision for your own GP and local arrangements - discuss the report, provider standards and any treatment arrangements with them directly.

Explore your options - without guessing the outcome
Check current pricing, clinician details, availability and scope before booking. An assessment does not guarantee a diagnosis or medication.
